If you’ve ever taken your kids to see the circus you know what comes next – they’ll be talking it for weeks. Why not let them be a part of it with these circus inspired Halloween costumes for kids? The Strong Man is our favourite; made with household items, it costs just a little over $10.
It all begins with the jacket: Attach fabric tails to the backside of an old or second-hand blazer, then cover the jacket with red duct tape
and the lapels in yellow duct tape. Decorate with fringe and attach a brass button. Use a piece of yellow fabric for an ascot and trim a mini top hat and the cuffs of the jacket with ribbon. Wear with black leggings, black boots and a plain white tee.

Choose either a bodysuit or tank and skirt for the base. Head out to your local craft store for flamboyant adornments. Use hot glue to add gems, sequins and ribbon, and use a simple hand stitch to attach feather boas or crinoline. Finish things off with a mini top hat or feather fascinator. Complete the look with face paint.
-
The Juggler

Begin with brightly coloured or patterned pants and a shirt. Cut
black and white duct tape into squares and cover an old or second-hand vest by positioning the squares diagonally row by row. Add felt flowers to the pants and vest, and use safety pins and duct tape to affix a fake flower (stem on) into a hole in the centre of a hat. To make juggling pins: cover empty plastic pop bottles with white duct tape and wrap electrical tape around diagonally.
-
The Strong Man

Attach black fabric strips vertically to both sides of a pair of red shorts. Cut the neck out of a striped tank so that it becomes low cut. (Tip: After cutting, apply a little hairspray on the edges to avoid fraying.) Use marker eyeliner to draw on chest hair and a moustache. Give him a barbell made from a black-tape-covered dowel rod and partially inflated black balloons.
-
The Clown

Cut the legs off a pair of overalls to make a skirt. Pin a wide hem (about an inch) and sew in fabric elastic. When finished, pull and tie the elastic to create a bubble skirt. Glue three large pompoms down the centre of the overalls. To make cuffs, cut off the feet from a pair of socks and attach lace to the ankle piece. For the collar, layer pieces of wide organza trim and glue on a ribbon to tie around neck. Accessorize with an oversized bow (attached to a headband) and boots that have been spray-painted red and coated in sparkles. Add face paint to finish.
