Cute Summer Craft Idea: Light-Up Fireflies

Photography by Katie Steuernagle, Ohdeedoh

There’s something so enjoyable about spending time in the great outdoors with your family in summer, even after the sun has set for the day. (Maybe it’s because we spend so much of the year cooped up inside, avoiding the snow.) And the best part? When those little fireflies (or lightning bugs, if you prefer) come out to play. Just watch the delight on your kids’ faces as they chase a bunch of glowing bugs around the yard—it’ll bring an instant smile to your face.

That’s why we think your nature-loving wee ones will get a kick out of this cute craft idea from Ohdeedoh. Not only are these light-up fireflies a fun and easy craft project for kids, but they’re also a great way to bring a little bit of the outdoors into your home and hang on to that summer feeling all year long.

What you’ll need:
• Plastic eggs (check your local dollar store)
• Flameless LED tealights
• Pipe cleaners
• Thumb tack
• Stickers
• Markers
• Duct tape

You’ll find the full instructions for this craft over on the Ohdeedoh website. We love how simple this craft is—apart from poking holes for pipe cleaners, kids will be able to do this one all on their own. Try substituting some fun googly eyes instead of drawing on stickers for a different effect. They’re a fun addition to an evening meal under the stars, or a DIY night light for little ones who aren’t keen on the dark.
