Canada’s #3 Coolest City: Vancouver

This impressive city scored with high numbers of family doctors and great education and diversity. The downside? It's near-highest in the nation housing costs vs. income "“ can you say $500,000 for a fixer-upper?

Family profile Tamara Wouters, interior designer and owner of Peridot Decorative Homewear (1512 W. 14th Ave.), Biski Gugushe, an actor, Teo, 5, and Tyson, 3.

What Tamara loves about Vancouver It’s an international city with a small-town vibe. Vancouver has somehow managed to maintain its neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct character. There’s access to outdoor activities like skiing, snowboarding, boating and hiking, great restaurants, and a casual, laid-back lifestyle.

What Teo and Tyson love First and foremost, they love the parks and beaches (city.vancouver.bc.ca). Second, being soooo close to the mountains. Both summer and winter, they offer a multitude of fun activities for all ages.

Favourite stores and restos For cool-kids’ clothing, Rieva and Reine in the South Granville district (2851 Granville St.). And ModernKid in Gastown for everything from designer kids’ decor to toys – it’s great for a splurge! If we have a sitter, we love Vij’s. The food’s amazing and the loungey atmosphere makes it feel like a full night out.

A perfect family day in Vancouver Start the morning off at Granville Island and grab baked goods and coffee, hot chocolate for the kids. We’d spend an hour or two at the Kids Market and let them burn off some steam before having lunch. Afterwards we’d pick up fresh local goods at the Granville Island Public Market, enjoy a leisurely walk along the seawall, then home for a wonderful dinner and hopefully a DVD.
