Ah, Pinterest. It seems like such a short time ago that we were still trying to answer the question “What’s a Pinterest?” and now, well, there’s just no denying the site’s massive popularity.

But as much as we’ve loved sharing ideas and repinning great finds, there’s always been one thing missing: the ability to make a private board.

Until now.

Pinterest has launched a new feature that allows users to set up secret boards that only they can see. And if you’re wondering “Why on earth do I need a secret board?” consider this: with the holidays coming up, you may want to use boards to help organize your gift ideas, or gather ideas for planning a fabulous holiday party—without sharing all the details with friends and family ahead of time.

Here’s what Pinterest software engineer Evrhet Milam had to say:
“The holidays are a time for being with family, sharing great meals, and, of course, surprising your favorite people with a special gift.  That’s why we thought the holidays were a perfect time to test one of our most frequently-requested features: secret boards! Starting today, we’ll be gradually rolling out a test that enables anyone to create three secret boards.”

Beyond the holiday season, we think that this is also a great tool for mamas-to-be. You may not be ready to share your pregnancy news with the world just yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start collecting inspiration for a beautiful nursery on your secret board!

If you don’t have the option to make a secret board yet, don’t panic—Pinterest is rolling out the change gradually throughout the day, so your turn will come! (We’re trying to be patient. Really. We are.) In the meantime, here are a few people you should follow while you wait, and a few tips to get the most out of your Pinterest experience. (Update 11/09/12: Pinterest Secret Boards are now available to everyone! Huzzah!)
