We love a good kids’ app: we love when it works, when it’s fun and when it’s educational. And if it keeps kids entertained and also prevents them from scrolling through our settings or accidentally texting our boss while trying to play, all the better!
Allow us to introduce you to Funcards, an app meets all of our criteria. (Our talented associate art director, Colleen, was actually the graphic designer for the app, so we knew it was going to be good!) Funcards is a flash card app, and it comes loaded with two decks: letters and numbers. As kids scroll through the brightly coloured pictures, they can hear the pronunciation and also read the spelling at the bottom: perfect for reading and comprehension skills. But where it gets really interesting is in the ability to make your own flash card decks.
You can take pictures of absolutely anything you want—family, things that rhyme, blue things, stuff around your neighbourhood, types of vehicles—and record words or sounds to go along with each card. You can also use photos you already have on your phone (turn your trip to the zoo last summer into an animals deck!). You can even create a deck and then share it by email. It’s well designed, easy to use and very intuitive. We created our own deck within minutes of playing with the app.
The app is for ages 4+, has a current rating of 5 stars, and is available through the iTunes app store for $1.99.
