Like most parents, I struggle with finding that balance between protecting my child from adversity and trying to teach her independence. (Sure climb those monkey bars, ummmm could you not hang upside-down from them with one hand?)
While I wouldn’t exactly label myself a helicopter parent, Hyper Parents & Coddled Kids, a new documentary premiering tonight on CBC at 9 p.m., addresses the whole phenomenon.
Some of the doc seems a little out of date for these early post-recession days, especially the whole notion of the multi-thousand dollar birthday party for a one-year-old because it’s a “milestone”, but the documentary has some interesting points from Carl Honoré, author of Under Pressure: Rescuing Our Children from the Culture of Hyper-Parenting as well as a look at Generation Y, the first batch of these coddled kids who have now entered the workforce with a sense of entitlement never seen before—although you may have already experienced this firsthand.
If you miss it tonight, it also airs tomorrow at 10 p.m. on CBC News Network.
