Babywearing (which means, literally, to wear your baby) isn’t for everyone, but it’s hard to resist the warm snuggles you’ll get from hoisting your baby, toddler or preschooler onto your front, back and — in some cases — hip using a baby carrier. Anyone who carries a baby frequently will tell you that a soft-structured carrier, or SSC, offers the best overall support and will help you carry your child for hours at a time. Comfortably. From faithful favourites to those that have just arrived in Canada, we give you the best five SSCs:

$200

BEST FOR: Babywearing from birth

Austria’s answer to babywearing comes as a hybrid. The emeibaby carrier is one part woven sling and one part soft-structured carrier, allowing a very customized fit for your baby — from just six pounds. The switch from infant to baby carrier is simple, and toddlers will love the extra-wide seat that helps support the ideal “M position.” Plus, you can find your inner hippie with some of the patterns available.

Read a full review of the emeibaby on Mommy Gearest.

-
Je Porte Mon Bébé Physio Carrier

$200

BEST FOR: All Season Carrying

Every once in a while, a new carrier comes to Canada that’s worth a little fanfare, and the Physio Carrier is one of them. Designed for all-season wear, this SSC understands that babywearing in the summer can be, well, damn hot—for both mama and bébé. So the zip-down front that exposes a mesh-only barrier between your baby and the world is a welcome option. While you do need to buy a $20 add-on for infant and back carrying, it’s a wise purchase; this is hands-down one of the easiest-to-use infant inserts for any SSC we’ve tried, and the band for back carries offers bigger babies and toddlers the kind of support that’s missing several other brands of SSCs.

BEST FOR: Pro-organic parents

$214.99

Original BEST FOR: Daddies and Grandpas 360 BEST FOR: Babies who have to face forward.

When mom groups meet and the topic turns to babywearing, the ergobaby is still one of the best known and most-loved. For men (and taller women, too), the ergobaby Original offers long straps and a wide, supportive waistband—not to mention some of the most neutral colours available. And although we rarely support babywearing that has baby facing out because it’s usually terribly for their developing physiology, the ergobaby 360 is actually designed to keep children’s bodies optimally aligned even when facing out. There are organic options and a host of accessories for these carriers, like the must-have Teething Pads. Note that ergobaby carriers can’t be used from birth without an additional insert.

-
TULA Toddler Carrier

$198.95

BEST FOR: Carrying older children

Many three and four year olds still love to be carried, but — sheesh! — are they ever heavy. While several carriers featured here can manage the average four-year-old’s weight, they don’t necessarily provide the optimal support under the legs and buttocks that the TULA Toddler Carrier will. Made specifically for bigger kids (25 to 50 lbs.), this Öko-Tex-certified carrier also has enough storage for a smartphone, set of keys and bank card. Oh, and let's not forget the oodles of fabulous prints TULA carries.
