Your Guide to Making Great Bento Lunches

Take school lunches to the next level this year with our tips for packing bento boxes like a pro

Have you jumped on the bento lunch bandwagon yet? While bento has been a part of Japanese culture for centuries, the bento lunch trend has really exploded in popularity in North America over the past decade. Google the phrase “bento lunch,” and you’ll find plenty of photos of elaborate bento lunches that are almost too beautiful to eat. But not every bento lunch has to be a foodie masterpiece! Lunches can be as simple or as creative as you want—it’s your call.

The purpose of a bento lunch is to provide your little one with a well-balanced meal, presented in a fun and interesting way. We love bento lunches because they’re a great way to encourage healthy eating, and are also very convenient. Think of them as a homemade version of the Lunchables that were so popular when you were a kid: a mix of items from different food groups, in small portions, that are perfect for little hands (and bellies!). Plus, if you’ve got a picky eater at home, bento lunches could be the key to banishing school lunch battles.
