Five Hacks for Super Fast Cleaning

Spring cleaning got you down? Here are 5 tips on how to make it oh-so-much-easier.

Spring cleaning is around the corner and for those of us with busy schedules (read: all of us) the massive annual task always seems rather daunting. To help you cut down on time and frustration this spring, here are a few quick and easy tips to make cleaning your home a breeze.

The pre-clean screen: Prepare the room

Before you start cleaning, move furniture either out of or to the sides of the room, so you can reach all of the carpet and flooring with ease. Scan the room and pick up any small items from the ground to ensure they do not disappear into your vacuum, where they can cause damage to the machine (and be utterly lost forever), like Lego, Barbie purses and marbles.

Dust first

Remove dust in your home from the highest levels that it accumulates (i.e. ceiling fans, bookshelves, etc.) and work your way down. This will prevent you from having to re-vacuum your floors if any dust or debris falls from above. To make it easier to access those hard-to-reach spaces, grab a lightweight, cord-free machine like the DysonV6 Absolute, which is engineered to be light and balanced for floor to ceiling cleaning.

Move from corner to corner

Begin vacuuming in the furthest corner of the room and work your way toward the door, moving your machine in slow and repetitive front-to-back motions. Though it may seem like duplicate work, vacuuming in both directions will help remove any dirt stuck deep in carpet fibres or hiding in the crevices of floorboards.

Revive your mattress

Cleaning your mattresses on a regular basis prevents dust mites and dead skin cells from building up and helps to promote a good night’s rest. The most effective way to reduce dust mite allergens is to use powerful suction. Removing dust mites primary food source—your skin cells—starves the tiny (gross!) creatures.

Vacuums with powerful suction and tools that dig deep into mattresses are a best bet. Simply run the machine over the top and sides of your mattress, pressing the cleaning tool firmly onto the fabric to draw out any microscopic dust and allergens beneath the surface. For a more thorough deep clean, flip your mattress to vacuum the often ignored underside.

Stick to a schedule

Think ahead and save additional time by following a weekly (or bi-weekly or even monthly) cleaning schedule like this one from Strawberry Mommycakes. Planning to clean regularly is a great way to rid your home of many allergy triggers and helps you do battle with irritating seasonal symptoms. And is a perfect way to not have to do one massive clean with the change of seasons, which we love to avoid!
