Getting kids to help out with chores around the house can be beneficial in teaching them about responsibility and hard work, but also makes for some good bonding time. While your little ones shouldn’t be tasked with polishing the China and scrubbing the floors just yet, there are plenty of simple tasks that you can involve the kids in, especially once school starts and their schedules are more routine.

He might need a step stool, but leaving some of the less soiled and non-dangerous items, like small plates, cups, and spoons, for your pre-teen to wash up and place in the drying rack, or just dry off after you wash them, is a great way to get him involved with the dinner process.

Older kids can do things like match socks, sort, and fold easy items.
Do you <a href=" http://www.canadianfamily.ca/ gear/books-and-movies/top-5-ways-to-clean-up-your-laundry/"target="_blank">hang clothes on a line in the backyard during the summer? Kids can help by handing over the pins and clothing items as needed.
Even toddlers can help. At two, my son already loves handing items to me for folding, and transferring small pieces of clothing from the washer to the dryer.

Dishwasher Loading/Unloading

While it’s best for the adults to take care of the sharp objects first, involving an older child in helping to load and unload the smaller bowls, plates, and unbreakable cups in and out of the dishwasher can encourage a sense of teamwork, and make them an integral part of the meal process.

Photography by Marcia Victorio

-

4. Vacuuming

Some kids might actually find this task fun, watching as the loud cleaning tool grabs dust particles and sucks them up into its abyss. Don’t expect the job to be perfectly done. The kids can run the vacuum over the open areas, but you’ll still have to go under furniture, around the corners, and give the area a once-over.

Photography by Samantha Delbergue

-

5. Polishing the Furniture

My favourite chore as a child was to spray Pledge on the wood furniture, and watch the grime magically disappear as I wiped it away with a cloth, just like they did on the commercials.
Kids should wear gloves while doing this if you’re using a chemical cleaning product, and wash their hands thoroughly after.
Give them some ownership of the task and assign one room in the home for which they’re responsible for keeping dust and stain-free.

Photography by Christine Persaud

Cleaning Their Room/Bathroom

Every child should be responsible for cleaning his own personal areas, including the bedroom and <a href=" http://www.canadianfamily.ca/ parents/organizing/8-tips-energize-bathroom/"target="_blank">bathroom. This can start off as a daily “tidy up” task, and slowly graduate to weekly chores, like cleaning the toothpaste and grime out of the bathroom sink (Tip: water and vinegar works just fine), to changing the bed sheets and putting away laundry.

Photography by Samantha Delbergue

-

7. Tidying Up

The "tidy up game" is one I play nightly with my son, to which we also sing a fun song. (It’s made up with the two essential words sung in a repetitively sweet melody that changes every night, though the sentiment is always the same.) This task can be started as early as 18 months, and involve putting away everything from toys strewn about the playroom, to Cheerios on the kitchen floor.

Photography by Christine Persaud
