Why we like it: We love that there's nothing safe with this nursery. It moves away from the idea that baby girls need pale pink nurseries. Maeve Rosalind's mom Michele went with a dark charcoal for the walls and added fun and full-of-personality pops of colour all throughout the room. She included many interesting Etsy finds as well as some of her own handiwork.

Michele's nursery tip: Gather inspirational images in one place so that you can refer to them and let common elements emerge. It's much easier to let a vision evolve on paper than trial and error in a room!

Why we like it: The colours here—whites, blues and greens—feel so fresh and clean. We also love the pairing of the old and new; the vintage crib mixes so well with simple accessories from IKEA.

Trenna's nursery tip: Mix old and new design elements to create a more interesting and stylish space such as modern lighting and a vintage crib. And keep in mind that If you use vintage items make sure they are up to current safety standards.

Why we like it: There's nothing dull about these neutrals. Even though Gretchen stuck with a limited colour scheme, she certainly didn't skimp on style. We love so many things about this nursery, especially the crib bedding and layered floor rugs.

Gretchen's nursery tip: A neutral backdrop provides a calm, serene space. It also creates a sort of blank canvas for your special items and pretty details to stand out and shine.

Why we like it: We love that the stand-out piece in this nursery is a black and white wallpaper. It really ties the room together by giving it a fresh and fun feel.

Tamara's nursery tip: Your baby won’t care what his room looks like. You’re essentially designing it for yourself. Don’t venture too far from your personal taste, and select furniture and accessories that can transition into other rooms later on.

-
Wicked n Weird’s Simple, Sunny Nursery

Why we like it: This bright nursery just makes us feel happy. It's so light and airy. Our favourite pieces are the homemade photo-clip crane mobile and the bunny that Lisa made in her Grade 8 home economics class.

Lisa's nursery tip:Think long-term when choosing the big pieces. How will you use them as your little one grows? The baby stage is shockingly fast! And of course, make sure you like them because you will be spending lots of time in there.

Why we like it: We love that Amanda really designed this nursery for her, based on her tastes, which include, but are not limited to, aqua-coloured gliders, colourful, Asian-made mobiles, owls and birds. We love every single detail of this room.

Amanda's nursery tip: Use more neutral colours and pick one or two colours to pop off of them in accessories. Think of your paint and rug as your jeans and white t-shirt, and everything else as jewelry.

-
Sarah Richardson's Modern Classic

Why we like it: Sarah Richardson stepped away from traditional for this nursery and we love what she has done with it. She has mixed great splashes of pattern on the walls and on furniture with beautiful whites and creams. Our favourite piece is the giraffe lamp.

Sarah's nursery tip: Use the largest, boldest pattern as a jumping-off point. Starting from that, find other fabrics [both patterned and solid] with similar colours. Go heavy on the main hues, light on the rest.

-
Tania Kwong’s Fresh, French and Feminine

Why we like it: It's so refreshing to see this lovely blue wall colour in a baby girl's room. It's so delicate and goes wonderfully with all of the white trimmings. Our favourite piece is the gorgeous Venetian mirror.

Tania's nursery tip: Be inspired by "non-baby" decor by choosing pieces that you love, whether it's a modern chair, a dressed-up wallpaper print or even a modern rug. There is no mould of what a nursery should look like; but it should definitely feel right to you.

-
YoungHouseLove: Green and Aqua

Why we like it: The fact that this beautiful room cost a total of $717 blows our minds. It's amazing that Sherry and John were able to snatch up so many great inexpensive finds and reinvent them, like their $20 dresser and $12 handmade mobile.

Sherry's nursery tip: If you find something that you love—a lamp shade to a mobile or some art—let that object inspire the rest of the room. Just pluck colors out of it for the curtains, furnishings and accessories. Make sure to take it one step at a time to avoid getting overwhelmed!

-
Vintage Sophisticate

Why we like it: This look is fabulous. The room feels so nostalgic and delicate, and yet there are places where surprises—like the black and white chevron rug—fit right in. You can easily tell how much thought and personality mom Joni put into this project.

Joni's nursery tip: Remember that you will be spending a lot of time in this room, so make sure it is comfortable for you as well as the baby. Start early and take your time. You will end up with a much more well put together space, and it will seem more thoughtful.

-
Book Lover’s Nursery by Elizabeth Sullivan Design

Why we like it: This nursery is filled with so much lovely colour and texture. And we don't know which one we like more—the amazing bookshelf wall or the blue-and-white striped ceiling.

Elizabeth's nursery tip: Start out with a piece of art or an accessory that you really love and build from there. A nursery is a room that you are going to spend a lot of time in and the baby won't even notice for a couple of years, so you have to enjoy it as an adult first and foremost!

-
Aubrey and Lindsay’s Bright White

Why we like it: This nursery does a very good job of not being overly juvenile (think: cars, trucks, ducks and airplanes) and yet is still very child-friendly, including a whimsical little bird that watches over the baby as he sleeps.

Lindsay's nursery tip: Pick something as your jumping off point for your nursery. For me, it was the giant giraffe that I loved—from there I went with a subtle animal theme for the room. It was easier to design the room when I had a focus, such as animals.

-
Tanya Linton’s Eclectic Bohemian

Why we like it: This is the kind of room we would like to have; it's a little bit funky, but it's all classy. We love the clean lines of everything in the nursery, and we especially love the curtains; they make the room so much more fun.

Tanya's nursery tip: Don’t just head to one baby store stressed out, assuming you have to buy everything all at once. Shop around and don’t just look for baby furniture. It takes more time but it’s worth it.
