Knowing what foods to give to your baby can be challenging at times, especially since there is a lot of conflicting information in the media. Canadian pediatricians have recently released a statement advising that it is not necessary to hold off the introduction of high-allergen foods to babies, which was a big sigh of relief for many parents. However there are still some foods that shouldn’t be offered to your little bundles of joy until she’s a little older.

-
Low Fat Dairy

Babies need fat to grow and develop, as well as to absorb fat soluble vitamins. Breast milk and infant formula are high in fat in order to provide nutrition to your baby in the first months, but when you stop <a href=
http://www.canadianfamily.ca/food/the-7-best-foods-for-breastfeeding-moms/">breastfeeding your little one still needs those fats in his diet. When you switch from breast milk or formula to cow’s milk, ensure it is full fat, until baby is at least two years of age.

-
Honey

Honey is one of the most important foods to try to avoid giving to your baby until he is at least a year old. Honey, as well as corn and maple syrup, can harbour bacterial spores that can lead to infant botulism, a rare but very serious disease. This includes honey used in baking, since the heat is not high enough to destroy the spores. At this age infants don’t need any added sugar, so a piece of fruit would make a wonderful dessert.

-
Caffeine

It may be obvious that you shouldn’t give your baby coffee, but there are other foods that contain caffeine, like teas (including black, green, white, and iced tea), soft drinks and chocolate. Caffeine affects your baby’s whole body, most importantly increasing his heart rate and blood pressure.

Caffeine also acts as a diuretic, making you pee more often, and this can lead to dehydration. Due to their small size, infants are more prone to dehydration, causing nausea and light-headedness. Offer your baby nutritious beverages like breast milk, formula or dairy milk, and plenty of water.

-
Foods That Can Pose a Choking Hazard

During their first years, babies are just learning to eat solid foods. Choosing the right foods is not an easy task, especially since some foods are harder to manage and can pose a choking hazard. Anything larger than a pea can get stuck in your baby’s throat, so make sure to cut all foods into manageable pieces not larger than ¼ of an inch.

Foods that are sticky, like peanut butter or other nut butters, can get stuck to your baby’s palate, making them hard to swallow. If you decide to feed your baby sticky foods, try to ensure you are also giving her something moist, like chunks of pear or banana. Hard food like candies, whole nuts, and popcorn should be avoided until at least three years of age.

-
Salt

There is no need to add any salt to a baby’s diet until he is at least one year old, as his kidneys are not developed enough to handle all that sodium. Your baby is bound to get some salt from packaged foods like cereal, breads and cheese, as well as salt naturally occurring in foods. To ensure you don’t overload your baby’s kidneys and increase his blood pressure with too much salt, look for lower sodium options when buying canned and processed foods. Sodium may even be found in a bottle of water, so try to read labels carefully when feeding new products to your child.
