Beef Steak & Lentil Salad

Got a baby in need of dinner? No need to cook twice! This dinner is a perfect first meal for baby...with just a few extra steps to make it perfect for tiny hands and mouths.

This meal is a perfect one for mom and dad...but also makes a great meal for baby. See below for directions for various serving suggestions.
  • STEAK :
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) each of Italian seasoning, coarsely ground pepper and salt
  • 1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) garlic powder
  • 1 lb (500 g) Beef Grilling Steak (e.g. Strip Loin or Top Sirloin), 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick
  • SALAD:
  • 1/2 cup (120 mL) minced red onion
  • 1/4 cup (60 mL) each of olive oil and chopped fresh basil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced fresh or roasted mashed
  • 2 tbsp (30 mL) red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each of salt and dried oregano
  • 2 cups (500 mL) assorted grilled vegetables (e.g. zucchini, sweet red pepper, asparagus, etc.), cut into chunks
  • 2 plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped
  • 1 can (540 mL) lentils, drained and rinsed
  • 1 jar (170 mL) marinated artichoke hearts, drained and coarsely chopped
  1. Combine pepper, Italian seasoning and garlic powder in small bowl. Rub mixture over steak; let stand for 15 minutes.

  2. Meanwhile, whisk together oil, red onion, garlic, vinegar, basil, salt and oregano in large salad bowl. Add grilled vegetables, tomatoes, lentils and artichoke hearts. Gently toss together and season to taste.

  3. Grill steak over medium-high heat for 4 to 7 minutes per side for medium doneness (160ºF/71ºC). Let stand for 5 minutes. Cut steak into thin slices; serve with lentil mixture.

  4. Making meal for baby: Start solids with a puree and then quickly progress to more textured versions from mashed to chopped to finger food.

  5. Baby’s Blend: Combine 1 slice of cooked steak with 1/4 cup (60 mL) of the lentils and cooked veggies if you like along with 2 to 3 tbsp (30 to 45 mL) of water, breast milk or formula. Blend in food processor or blender until smooth.

  6. Mashed Mix: Combine slice of cooked steak with 1/4 cup (60 mL) of the lentils and cooked veggies if you like. Mix in food processor or blender until dinner is minced.

  7. Finger Food Fun: Baby can join the family table, eating foods that are cut into bite-sized pieces that can be managed by baby him/herself.
