Buying a home is one of the most exciting things…of course, it can also be one of the most challenging. Add in renovations, a busy family with a child, a limited budget and huge dreams, and you have a recipe for stress. How are we managing? With some serious tenacity, a lot of coffee and a significant amount of help from some really amazing people in orange aprons.
We bought a beautiful little house that had been on the market for a while by the time our skeptical realtor showed it to us. It is on the outskirts of our dream area and was way under our budget…and it doesn’t have a kitchen. Well, it has a kitchen, it just isn’t usable. The largest room in the house, it has a fridge/freezer the size of a shoebox, a stove that heats to molten lava no matter the temperature you choose, and no dishwasher. This kitchen is hardly the stuff of dreams…and as foodies and parents, we have relatively large dreams.
Recently, hugging tight to those dreams, we headed out to our local Home Depot Canada, looking to be inspired by shiny fridges, stunning dishwashers and—of course—gorgeous ranges. Our dream kitchen needs not only to be functional; with our busy lives and love of food and family, we want a room that will improve our lives, keep us on track and also be a place to meal plan, convene and connect while spending time “en famille”. We also want a room that reflects our individuality, which can be hard to imagine while searching a sea of similar appliances.
The know-how and in-depth product knowledge of Home Depot Canada’s orange apron associates have been key to keeping our sanity and at the same time, working at creating the kitchen we’ve always wanted. They effortlessly walk us through dozens of decisions every time we go and can even arrange for the delivery and installation of our appliances when the time comes.
But what is on our wish list? And how can appliances make our lives better…?
Connection as a Family
With the kitchen acting the “hub” of family life, I always have recipes, grocery lists, appointments and notes everywhere. A dream come true (and well-named), the Samsung Family Hub is so much more than a fridge. With built-in food management, family connection and entertainment capabilities it would help us manage our lives.
With the 21.5” touchscreen, we would be able to create grocery lists, search over 20,000 recipes in the app and get suggestions based on our family’s food preferences. We would never miss a play date or appointment if we sync our calendars to it, and the built-in cameras would make life easy when we need to check our food supply from our mobile phones during last-minute shopping trips.
Since we intend to be in the kitchen a lot and music is a big thing for us, we love that the Hub has built-in speakers for streaming. You can also display personalized daily information on the screen, like news, weather, schedules and traffic, and leave notes or voice recordings for family members.
Connectivity Makes Life Simpler
I’ve always thought it ingenious to have a washer and dryer on the main floor, right off of the kitchen. And if we end up with the set that is at the top of our wish list —the LG Electronics Washer/Dryer—we not only would be able to do laundry on the regular, but we could also keep our sanity intact.
The LG Electronics front load washer has amazing features like being able to wash and spin two separate loads at the same time as well as having an ultra-large capacity (5.2 cu.ft.). You can also control the machine from anywhere (like the park! or work! or the couch!) with the LG SmartThinQ app. Through the app you can select a cycle, start or stop the wash, and get notifications about when the laundry will be done on your smartphone. This washer also has a setting that virtually eliminates dirt, odours and wrinkles quickly—whether it’s a favourite shirt, your most comfy pair of jeans or some urgently needed gym clothes—small loads no longer have to wait. Plus, the LG Electronics electric dryer is a fantastic timesaver, with features like LG TurboSteam technology: toss a dress shirt in the dryer, turn on TurboSteam and in 10 minutes it will be in tip-top shape.
Less Time and Effort On Dishes = More Time for Family
I have not lived without a dishwasher since my university days…and am not loving doing so now (especially when someone grabs a new water glass every hour on the hour). I’m certain that the Bosch Home Connect Dishwasher would be an appliance worth waiting for.
With its time delay function, you can pre-set a start time, whether it’s during the day or at night. The load sensor provides for optimal water usage even for half or partial loads, saving water and electricity. It also accommodates way more dishes in one wash cycle with its flexible 3rd rack with fold-down sides that adds 30% more loading capacity (I can’t wait!).
Making Our House Feel Like OUR Home
These days, mid-renovations, with both of us working, life is busy and we are eating way too much takeaway. But, because the oven we have now is so horrible, I have set my sights on a new Whirlpool range. Its built-in sensors monitor temperature and adjust the cooking elements to help food bake evenly. Its frozen bake tech allows you to skip preheating and cook frozen food like lasagna or pizza with preprogrammed settings that automatically adjust cooking times, taking you from oven to the table in less time.
And sure, we could fill our kitchen with stainless steel appliances and we would be happy with the resulting aesthetic. BUT, when I saw the Whirlpool Range in the rather unique sunset bronze finish, I was instantly smitten. Add in all of its amazing tech and it will be the ultimate finishing touch on our new kitchen (which, with all this planning, is surely going to become our family’s favourite room). In fact, with Whirlpool offering several products in the sunset bronze finish (fridge, range, range hood, wall oven), we have convinced my parents to redo the cottage kitchen next year in exactly that colour (though honestly, my dad prefers the matte black line by LG, so we’ll see how that turns out).
We are definitely on track to creating the kitchen of our dreams and hoping that the appliances we have on our list will do just that. The Home Depot Canada’s goal is to help customers (like us—and you!) create and maintain the home of their dreams. Head to your closest Home Depot Canada store to speak with an orange apron associate for more information on how you can incorporate their extensive line-up of appliances into your kitchen design. And! Don’t miss the Black Friday deals on appliances taking place from November 22 – December 5, 2018.
