Elysa Morin

What a nominator said:

Mrs. Morin is an outstanding teacher. She is innovative in her practice, dedicated, kind and passionate. She makes my son, Kieran, excited to go to school every day. In a diverse class of Grade 1 students, she appears to have endless patience!

When I volunteer in the classroom, I am in awe observing Mrs. Morin teach. I’m an educator myself and I find myself inspired by her innovation. For example, when the Grade 1 class needs to do focused desk work, she gives each student a piece of gum to chew. Immediately, everyone is working quietly at their desks. Additionally, she is so in tune with the students’ needs, she can tell when they are just at that point where they can’t focus or work any longer, and right then she gets them to take a “body break”. They do yoga, running on the spot or some silly dancing. This kind of attention to the energy level and attention span of six-year-olds ensures they are able to learn to the best of their abilities.

Here are some more ways Mrs. Morin goes above and beyond:

    – She helped the students send their parents Valentine’s Day cards in the mail;

    – She called our house on Thanksgiving and left a message for Kieran saying how thankful she was to be his teacher;

    – She teaches yoga classes before school and at lunch for the students;

    – She gives recognition to individual ways of solving problems. She has made Kieran’s Grade 1 experience fantastic and I wish we could keep her for Grade 2!

What is the biggest lesson you have learned from your students?

Admittedly, I am a naturally stressed out person and have been a bit of a work-a-holic since childhood! My young students’ ability to fully immerse themselves in enjoying the moment—even the smallest, and especially the “silliest” moments—is an important lesson and reminder for me.

If you win, how will you allocate the Teacher Awards prize money?:

I would love to purchase a class set of yoga mats. I feel it is so valuable to teach children mindfulness and self-regulation strategies, as well as body awareness. I certainly see the benefits within my own classroom, and love to witness the expressions of peace and contentment on the children’s faces while teaching our school’s yoga club. I would also excitedly buy some really nice new art supplies for our school. I love sharing my passion for art with students!
