What the nominator said:
Mr. Papez was my Grade 6 and 7 teacher. Mr. Papez brought the classroom to life and provided a calm, safe and fun learning environment. He had hands-on activities and games ready at all times. He hung positive quotes on the wall each week and allowed us to have a class party if we reached a number of points. He encouraged me and my best friend to take part in the LEGO robotics team. As the only two girls on the team, he motivated us to come back the following year and to encourage other girls to join. This last year, our school sent four teams—one of which was made up of all girls—to the regional robotics competition! Mr. Papez made me love all things STEM. As a result, my best friend and I have participated in York University’s Science Saturdays classes and GoEng and GoCode girls, offered by The Ontario Network of Women in Engineering. Mr. Papez turned me into an A student and taught me to shoot for the stars.
What is your teaching philosophy/creed?:
If you do what you love you will never have to work a day in your life.
What tips do you have for parents on how they can help prepare their kids to get the most out of the school day?:
Sit and work with everyone, don’t tie yourself to any one person even if they are your best friend; when you work with someone new you get a new perspective and experience that you may not otherwise have. If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.
