What the nominator said:
In only his second year in the role of athletic director, Matt Burrows has been working hard to increase our school spirit, pride, and sense of community in our school. Last year, Mr. Burrows created an Athletic Leadership Club to help with this. Students (athletes and non-athletes) have come together to volunteer their time and energy in various areas, including taking pictures during athletic events, promoting the “Game of the Week,” making and handing out free hotdogs and popcorn, organizing fan buses to games to support school athletic teams, score keeping and helping run tournaments. Most recently, he organized a school wide 24-hour bike-a-thon that raised over $70,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation which grants the wishes of local children living with life-threatening medical conditions. That’s seven wishes granted in only the first year. It really is exciting to see what he has done so far and to think where it can go in the next couple years.
What do you love the most about your job?
The opportunities to guide, motivate, inspire and work with the young students at Jasper Place.
What is the biggest lesson you have learned from your students?
Every person and situation is different, unique and requires special attention. We are all still learning and making mistakes along the way. The growth from the mistakes is what makes all the difference.
